Subtle Subtitles: assistive technology goes ubiquitious

Interactive Media Designer, Calum Pringle from Dundee University has developed a prototype application on the iPhone that assists individuals who are losing the ability to speak clearly.

The purpose of “Subtle Subtitles” is to design a prototype of a wearable display used to help adults with Ataxic Dysphonia (or Dysarthria) communicate. The microphone picks up on keywords that are hard for the person to pronounce and displays them on the iPhone screen so that others can follow the conversation. This can be worn discretely by inserting it into a scarf or clothing garment.
