Inside the artist studio #2

As we headed of of Kersten’s studio we passed a pile of manikin body parts with a sign on the wall with the word “Free” scribbled on it, which left me tempted to take a torso and use it as an umbrella stand. Before we hit up the second studio we had brunch at Dressler at 149 Broadway in Brooklyn. Around 3pm we arrived at another artist studio who was originally from San Francisco.

She explained that the inspiration for one of her projects was to try to find “randomness” in society. To her disbelief this was extremely difficult to actually find. Almost everything has an order and pattern. Even the iPod Shuffle doesn’t really seem to scramble your songs. One work that she tried to exemplify her theory was a photograph she took of an analog TV screen (before they were discontinued). She then took the print and magnified it onto a large canvass. The trick was to stand far enough away and the picture could eventually look clear.

She started to experiment with pop-up art and wants to eventually make a book. It immediately reminded me of the ABC3D book that I found off Swiss-Miss.
